Krakatoa (813 M)


Krakatoa (Krakatau; Indonesian) was a volcanic island located in Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.

The eruption and explosion of Krakatau in 1883 caused the massive tsunami until 46 meters (151 ft) high. Some of pyroclastic flows reach to Sumatra coast as much as 40 km (25 miles) away.

The explosion is considered to be a loudest sound had ever heard in (modern) history. The explosion was heard in Perth Australia about 3,110 km (1,930 miles) to the south, as well as the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius about 4,300 km (3,000 miles) to the west.

The combined effects of pyroclastic flow, volcanic ashes and tsunamis had disastrous result in the region and worldwide. The average global temperature fell by as much as 1.2 degree Celsius (2.2 F). Weather pattern to be chaotic for years and temperatures did not return to normal until 1888.

The eruption darkened the sky worldwide for years afterward and produced spectacular sunset throughout the world for many months. The eruptions also produced a Bishop’s Ring around the sun by day and purple light in twilight. For several years after the eruption moon appear to be blue or sometimes green.

In the 1927, a new volcano island appeared from location of the eruption. The new volcano and island are called Anak Krakatau or Child of Krakatoa.

The Island of Anak Karaktau is a National Park today. If you are adventurous enough, you can try this trip in Krakatau as your option. The easy way can be reached from Jakarta to Carita Beach Anyer with bus from Kalideres station.

We can sail by speed boat from Carita Beach to Krakatau.  During the trip you may see the group of flying fishes, tuna and dolphins on the way. Snorkeling skin dive at Rakata Island coral reef, fishing, diving and also climbing Anak Krakatau are possibility activities in Krakatau tour.

Most of tour operators have camp package during the night at Rakata Island. You can enjoy the eruption of Krakatau at night from here as watch as a light of fireworks.

If you want to stay night in hotel you can find a simple hotel at Sabesi Island which belongs to Indonesian Tourism Board, just walking distance from Rakata island jetty.

Anak Krakatau is an active volcano. You must beware of strong current and large waves during August until November.
