Krakatoa (Krakatau;
Indonesian) was a volcanic island located in Sunda Strait between the islands
of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.
The eruption and
explosion of Krakatau in 1883 caused the massive tsunami until 46 meters (151
ft) high. Some of pyroclastic flows reach to Sumatra coast as much as 40 km (25
miles) away.
The explosion is
considered to be a loudest sound had ever heard in (modern) history. The
explosion was heard in Perth Australia about 3,110 km (1,930 miles) to the
south, as well as the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius about 4,300 km (3,000
miles) to the west.
The combined
effects of pyroclastic flow, volcanic ashes and tsunamis had disastrous result
in the region and worldwide. The average global temperature fell by as much as
1.2 degree Celsius (2.2 F). Weather pattern to be chaotic for years and
temperatures did not return to normal until 1888.
The eruption
darkened the sky worldwide for years afterward and produced spectacular sunset
throughout the world for many months. The eruptions also produced a Bishop’s
Ring around the sun by day and purple light in twilight. For several years
after the eruption moon appear to be blue or sometimes green.
In the 1927, a new volcano island appeared from location of the eruption. The new volcano and island are called Anak Krakatau or Child of Krakatoa.
