Toba


Toba was a super volcanic eruption that occurred 74,000 years ago at Lake Toba in North Sumatra Indonesia. This mega big bang caused prolonged worldwide winter and released ash in huge plume.

Toba was a largest eruption released an estimated 2,500 cubic kilometers of rock was blasted from the mountain and ash to the atmosphere that covered thousand of square miles.

The eruption caused the mountain to fall in itself and from the caldera then filled with water to become a lake known as Toba Lake.

Toba Lake is an immense volcanic lake covering an area 1,707 km2 (1,000 km2 bigger than Singapore) with an island called Pulau Samosir (Samosir Island) in the middle.

Toba Lake is the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. The lake is 15 kilometers long, 30 kilometers wide and up to 505 kilometers (1,666 ft) deep. Lake Toba is also one of the best places in Asia as beautiful and spectacular destination to chill out.

Most visitors fly to Medan Polonia International airport and then travel onwards by land to Parapat the town by Toba Lake. Parapat is about 4 hours by car from Medan or 4-6 hours by public bus.
